Comparison of the academic performance of 2016 and 2017 cohorts of nursing students, from Pedro de Valdivia University, La Serena Campus

To compare academic performance of nursing students, cohort 2016 and 2017, with objective-based methodology, versus competency-based methodology. Quantitative, descriptive, comparative, prospective, transversal. Nursing students from Pedro de Valdivia University, who carried out their clinical practice in the subject of medical surgery, were evaluated through clinical practice guidelines in the Medicine and Surgery Service of the Antonio Tirado Lanas de Ovalle Hospital. Statistical analysis was performed using the Student's t-test for independent samples, with a confidence level of 95% using the SPSS software, version 24. The study population was made up of 48 students, 18 from 2016 and 30 from 2017. In the cognitive area, the 2016 cohort had an average of 5.8 + - 0.8 and the 2017 cohort students had one of 4 .5 + - 0.9. In the procedural area, the 2016 cohort had an average of 4.3 + - 1.2 and the 2017 cohort, one of 5.0 + - 0.9. In the attitudinal area, the 2016 cohort had an average of 4.7 + - 1.0 and the 2017 cohort one of 5.7 + - 1.1. There are statistically significant differences between the 2016 and 2017 cohorts in the cognitive, procedural and attitudinal areas.
