Role of the link with the environment in the training process of medical students from the perspective of their academics

The study plan of the Medicine Career of the University of Antofagasta (Chile) indicates that the graduated doctor is a professional with a solid humanist scientific training. The general objective of the research was to know the perception of the academics of the Department of Medical Sciences of the University of Antofagasta on the relevance of the activities related to the environment in the training process of the medical student. An exploratory-descriptive cross-sectional quantitative study was carried out. The sample consisted of 25 academics from a universe of 48 (52.08% of the population). The descriptive survey considered dimensions related to the role of the relationship with the environment in the training process, teaching strategies, academic role, knowledge of the graduate and/or professional profile, and university regulations. Regarding the results, in the different dimensions of analysis, the percentages that refer degrees of agreement or high importance with the statements made, are higher than 60%. In the question asking teachers if they have proposed the development of activities related to the environment in their respective subjects, only 44% answered affirmatively. Regarding the discussion, it can be seen that the academics give relevance to the role of the relationship with the environment in the training process of the medical student, from a general perspective, from the academic role and what is established in the Graduation Profile of the graduate doctor. from the University of Antofagasta.
