Abstract

To deepen and explore new perspectives in the field of translating locutions from Arabic into Spanish. The translation into Spanish of locutions present in the novel ‘The woman of oblivion’ by Arabic author Mohamed Berrada were analyzed to find out the importance of contextual manifestations in the translation process as well as to check the usefulness of new theories in the critical analysis of the translation. It was found that the problems raised by the translation of the locutions force translators to choose from different strategies: partial equivalence, literalization; null equivalence or omission. The translation of locutions entails a decisive textual-contextual, cognitive, and pragmatic component that raises problems that are more difficult to solve the farther the languages to be translated are from each other.
